About Discount & Margin Calculator

Work out sale prices, profit margins and selling prices, with GST if you need it. The Discount mode handles a percentage or a flat rupee discount plus an extra discount on top, and shows what you pay, what you save and the effective discount. Margin & markup turns a cost and a selling price into profit, margin and markup, and Price for a margin finds the selling price for the margin you want. It is useful for shoppers checking offers and for shop owners pricing stock, and it runs in your browser.

Rules & Limitations

  • Discounts must be between 0% and 100%, and a flat discount can't be more than the price.
  • An extra discount is taken off the already reduced price, so 50% plus an extra 20% is 60% off, not 70%.
  • Margin shows n/a when the selling price is 0, and markup shows n/a when the cost is 0.
  • With GST-inclusive prices, profit, margin and markup are worked out on the prices before GST. The same GST rate is assumed for the cost and the selling price.
  • GST slabs changed on 22 Sep 2025: most items are now at 5% or 18%, with 40% for luxury and sin goods. Use Custom for other rates, such as 3% on gold.

Discount & Margin Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100, then subtract that from the price. ₹2,000 with 25% off is 2,000 - 500 = ₹1,500.

Is 50% off plus an extra 20% off the same as 70% off?

No. The extra 20% is taken off the reduced price, so ₹2,000 becomes ₹1,000 and then ₹800. You save ₹1,200, which is 60% off.

How do I calculate a GST-inclusive price?

Multiply the price before GST by 1 plus the rate: ₹1,000 with 18% GST is ₹1,180. To go the other way, divide the inclusive price by 1.18. Turn on GST here to see both.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Both use the same profit. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price, and markup is profit as a share of the cost. Buying at ₹800 and selling at ₹1,000 is a 20% margin and a 25% markup.

How do I find the selling price for a target margin?

Divide the cost by 1 minus the margin. For a 25% margin on a ₹800 cost, that is 800 ÷ 0.75 = ₹1,066.67. Use the Price for a margin mode.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere or saved.
