About Percentage Calculator

Answer the five everyday percentage questions in one place: X% of a number, what percent one number is of another (such as marks out of a total), the percentage change from one value to another, a number increased or decreased by a percentage, and the original value before a percentage was added or taken off (such as a price before GST). Every answer updates as you type and can be copied. It runs in your browser.

How to Use

Replace the example values. You can type commas, as in 1,50,000. For the increase, decrease and reverse cards, choose the direction first.

3

Read and copy the answer

The answer and a sentence explaining it appear next to the inputs. Press Copy to copy the number, or Reset examples to start again.

  • A percentage change from 0, or a percentage of a total of 0, is shown as "Not defined" because it would mean dividing by zero.
  • Percentage change is measured against the size of the starting value, so a move from -100 to -50 is a 50% increase.
  • Margin and markup are in the Discount & Margin Calculator.

Percentage Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate the percentage of marks?

Divide the marks you scored by the maximum marks and multiply by 100. For 412 out of 500, that is 412 ÷ 500 × 100 = 82.4%. Enter the marks in Value and the maximum in Total on the "X is what percent of Y?" card.

How do I calculate the price before GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Divide the price by 1 plus the GST rate. For ₹2,950 including 18% GST, that is 2,950 ÷ 1.18 = ₹2,500, so the GST is ₹450. Use the "Reverse percentage" card with "Was added" selected.

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. A salary going from ₹40,000 to ₹46,000 is (46,000 - 40,000) ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 15%.

Why is a 20% discount not undone by adding 20%?

Because the second percentage is taken of a different number. ₹1,000 less 20% is ₹800, and ₹800 plus 20% is ₹960. To find the original price from a sale price, use the "Reverse percentage" card with "Was taken off".

What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?

A percentage point is the plain difference between two percentages, while a percentage change compares them. A rate going from 10% to 12% rises by 2 percentage points, which is a 20% increase.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. All calculations happen in your browser, and nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
