About Find & Replace

Find and replace text with a live result. Matches are highlighted in your text and the result updates as you type. You can chain several find and replace rules, match whole words or letter case, use regular expressions with capture groups, and turn \n into new lines. Runs in your browser.

How to Use

1

Paste your text

Paste it into the Text box. Matches of the first rule are highlighted.

2

Add rules

Type what to Find and what to Replace with. Click Add rule for more; rules run in order, each on the result of the one before.

3

Choose options

Use Match case, Whole words only, Replace all (off replaces only the first match), Regular expression, and Read \n and \t as new line and tab.

4

Use the result

Click Copy or Download .txt, or Apply to input to keep editing the result with new rules.

  • Data Stored Locally: Nothing is saved; the text and rules are cleared when you leave the page.

Rules & Limitations

  • Regular expressions use JavaScript syntax: ^ and $ match at the start and end of each line, and $1 or $<name> insert captured groups.
  • In plain text mode the replacement is inserted exactly as typed, so $ signs stay as they are.
  • A regular expression that runs for more than 2 seconds is stopped and nothing is replaced.
  • Only the first rule's matches are highlighted, up to 2,000 of them.
  • Nothing is saved. Clear and Apply to input can be undone from the message that appears.

Find & Replace FAQ

How do I replace commas with new lines?

Find a comma (or a comma and a space) and replace it with \n, then turn on Read \n and \t as new line and tab. Use \t instead for a tab.

How do I use regex capture groups in a replacement?

Turn on Regular expression, put brackets round the parts to keep, and use $1, $2 and so on in Replace with. For example, find (\w+)@(\w+) and replace it with $2 at $1.

How do I replace only whole words?

Turn on Whole words only. Then cat matches "cat" but not "catalog". It works for Hindi and other scripts too.

What does "Every match is empty" mean?

Your pattern can match nothing at all, for example x* also matches zero x's, so the replacement is put between every character. Use x+ to need at least one.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Finding and replacing happen in your browser and nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

What is the difference between Find & Replace and the Regex Tester?

The Regex Tester shows what a pattern matches. Find & Replace also changes the text, runs several rules in a row and gives you the edited text to copy or download.
