About Diff Checker

Compare two versions of a text or code file and see exactly what changed. Differences are shown side by side or in one unified column, with line numbers and the changed words highlighted inside each line. You can ignore spaces, case or a missing final newline, jump between changes and save the result as a .patch file. It runs in your browser, so contracts, letters and code stay on your device.

How to Use

1

Add the two versions

Paste the original text on the left (Original) and the new one on the right (Changed). You can also click Open file or drop a file onto either box.

2

Read the differences

Removed lines are marked with − and added lines with +, and the words that changed are highlighted. Use the arrow buttons to jump from one change to the next.

3

Adjust and export

Switch between Side by side and Unified, turn on the ignore options or Hide unchanged lines, then use Copy patch or Download .patch.

Privacy & Processing

  • Mode: local
  • Files Leave Browser: Local tool processing; review details below
  • Max Input Size: Device memory limits
  • Account Required: No
  • Data Stored Locally: Nothing is saved; the texts are cleared when you close the page.
  • Network Processing: Assets or models may require an initial download

Both texts and any files you open are compared in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Rules & Limitations

  • Compares line by line. Spaces and capital letters count as changes unless you turn on the ignore options.
  • A missing newline at the end of a file shows as a change, marked "No newline at end", unless you turn on Ignore final newline.
  • Files up to 5 MB, text only. Windows and Unix line endings are treated as the same.
  • Very large texts that differ almost everywhere may take too long; the tool then asks you to compare smaller parts.
  • The patch always contains every difference, even those hidden by the ignore options, so it applies cleanly.

Top Suggestions

  • Spotting what changed between two drafts of a letter, contract or assignment
  • Reviewing edits to code or configuration files before you save them
  • Checking two lists or CSV exports for added or removed rows
  • Making a .patch file to share a change with a developer

Diff Checker FAQ

How do I compare two texts for differences?

Paste the first version into Original and the second into Changed. The differences appear below straight away, with removed lines marked − and added lines marked +, and the changed words highlighted.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files you open or drop are read by your browser and compared on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere or saved, so it is safe for private documents.

Can I ignore whitespace and capital letters?

Yes. Ignore spaces at line start and end treats lines that differ only in leading or trailing spaces as the same, and Ignore case treats A and a as equal. Spaces inside a line still count.

What is the difference between side-by-side and unified diff?

Side by side shows the original on the left and the changed text on the right, line against line. Unified shows one column with removed lines followed by added lines, like git diff, and is easier to read on a phone.

How do I create a patch file?

Click Download .patch to save a unified diff (the format of diff -u), or Copy patch to copy it. Apply it with git apply or the patch command to turn the original into the changed version.
