Runs in your browser 100 MB LimitImage Tools#Compression#GIF

Shrink animated GIFs by size, frame rate and colours, or to a target such as under 8 MB, in your browser.

Compression runs in your browser with FFmpeg. The first time you compress, it downloads a one-time engine of about 31 MB; your browser keeps it for next time.

About GIF Compressor

Make animated GIFs smaller in your browser, without uploading them. Lower the size, frame rate and number of colours yourself, or pick a target such as Under 8 MB and let the tool try stronger settings until the GIF fits. It keeps the original timing and looping, and tells you honestly when a GIF can't be made smaller.

How to Use

1

Add a GIF

Drop, paste or choose one GIF up to 100 MB. Its size, frame count and frame rate are shown.

2

Choose settings or a target

Leave Target on Manual and adjust Size, Frame rate, Colours and Colour reduction, or choose Under 8 MB or Under 1 MB.

3

Compress

Click Compress GIF. The first time, your browser downloads the FFmpeg engine (about 31 MB) once; later runs start straight away.

4

Compare and download

Switch between Compressed and Original, check the saving, then click Download GIF. If the result isn't smaller, you are offered the original instead.

GIFs are compressed in your browser with FFmpeg and never uploaded. The FFmpeg engine (about 31 MB) is downloaded from this website the first time you compress.

Rules & Limitations

  • The first compression downloads a 31 MB engine, which can use mobile data. Your browser caches it for later visits.
  • Compression is lossy: fewer colours, frames or pixels mean a smaller file but lower quality. Colour reduction Strong can show banding.
  • GIFs that are already well optimised may not get smaller; the tool then shows no saving and offers the original.
  • Long or large GIFs need a lot of memory and may fail on phones. A warning appears when a GIF looks too big.
  • GIF files only. Converting video to GIF or GIF to MP4 is not supported here.

GIF Compressor FAQ

How do I reduce the size of a GIF?

Drop the GIF here and click Compress GIF; the default settings merge near-identical colours. For a bigger saving, lower Size or Frame rate, or pick a target such as Under 1 MB.

How do I make a GIF under 8 MB for Discord?

Choose Under 8 MB as the target and click Compress GIF. The tool tries progressively smaller settings and keeps the first result that fits, which also suits WhatsApp.

Can I compress a GIF without losing quality?

Rarely. GIFs are already compressed, so real savings come from fewer colours, frames or pixels. With Colour reduction set to Light the change is hard to see on most GIFs.

Why is my compressed GIF bigger than the original?

The original was already optimised, often by the app that made it. The tool shows "No saving" and lets you download the original; lowering Size or Frame rate will still shrink it.

Is my GIF uploaded to a server?

No. FFmpeg runs inside your browser, so the GIF never leaves your device. The only download is the engine itself, from this website.

Does it keep the animation speed?

Yes. Frame timing and looping are kept unless you lower the frame rate, in which case frames are dropped evenly and the GIF plays for the same length of time.
