Loan / EMI Calculator FAQ
How is EMI calculated?
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1), where P is the loan amount, r the monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n the number of months. For ₹50 lakh at 8.5% for 20 years the EMI is ₹43,391.
Why is most of my early EMI interest?
Interest is charged on the balance still owed, which is highest at the start. As the balance falls, more of each EMI goes to principal. The yearly schedule shows this clearly.
Should I prepay my loan or reduce the EMI?
Keeping the EMI and shortening the tenure usually saves the most interest, which is what this calculator shows. Check whether your lender charges a prepayment fee; RBI rules bar such fees on floating-rate loans to individuals.
Does a longer tenure save money?
No. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises the total interest, often by a lot. Compare 15, 20 and 25 years here to see the difference.
Is my data sent to a bank or saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, shared or stored.
