Income Tax Calculator FAQ
Which tax regime is better for me?
It depends on your deductions. With only the standard deduction, the new regime costs less for almost everyone. The old regime can win when you claim large amounts such as HRA, ₹1.5 lakh under 80C, ₹2 lakh of home-loan interest and NPS. Enter your deductions here to compare the exact totals.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
Yes, if your taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less, the section 87A rebate cancels the tax. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction makes a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the income above ₹12 lakh.
What are the new regime tax slabs for FY 2025-26 and 2026-27?
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 to 8 lakh, 10% from ₹8 to 12 lakh, 15% from ₹12 to 16 lakh, 20% from ₹16 to 20 lakh, 25% from ₹20 to 24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Budget 2026 kept the same slabs for tax year 2026-27.
What is a tax year?
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act 2025 replaces "financial year" and "assessment year" with a single "tax year". Tax year 2026-27 runs from April 2026 to March 2027. The slabs, rebate and standard deduction used here are the same as in FY 2025-26.
Do senior citizens pay less tax?
Only in the old regime, where income up to ₹3 lakh is tax-free from age 60 and up to ₹5 lakh from age 80. The new regime has the same slabs for every age.
