About Audio Frequency Tone Generator

Play a test tone at any frequency from 20 Hz to 20 kHz as a sine, square, triangle or sawtooth wave, or play white or pink noise. Presets cover a 50 Hz mains hum, A4 440 Hz, a 1 kHz test tone, a 20 Hz to 20 kHz sweep and a left/right speaker test. Use it to check speakers and headphones, tune instruments or test your hearing range, and download a short WAV file.

How to Use

1

Set the frequency

Drag the Frequency slider, type a value in Hz, or use −1 Hz, +1 Hz, Octave down and Octave up. The nearest musical note is shown under the number.

Rules & Limitations

  • Sound plays only while this page is open.
  • Many phone and laptop speakers cannot play below about 100 Hz or above about 15 kHz, so a silent tone there is normal.
  • Start quietly, especially with headphones. Square and sawtooth waves sound louder, so their volume is reduced automatically.
  • Frequency changes take effect smoothly while playing; the sweep runs for 20 seconds and then stops.

Audio Frequency Tone Generator FAQ

How do I test left and right speakers?

Click Left/right test. The tone switches between the left and right channel every second, and the status line says which one should be playing. If the sides are swapped, check how your speakers or earphones are connected.

Why can't I hear the tone?

Raise the volume slowly from 15%. Small speakers often cannot play very low (below 100 Hz) or very high (above 15 kHz) tones, and many adults cannot hear above 15 to 17 kHz.

Why does India use a 50 Hz hum?

Mains electricity in India alternates at 50 Hz, so badly earthed audio equipment hums at 50 Hz and its multiples. Play the 50 Hz preset to compare with a hum you hear.

What is the difference between white and pink noise?

White noise has equal energy at every frequency and sounds hissy. Pink noise has less energy at high frequencies, sounds deeper, and is used to balance speakers in a room.

Is any data sent or saved?
