About Roman Numeral Converter

Convert numbers to Roman numerals and back, from 1 to 3,999, and write dates such as 15.08.1947 in Roman numerals. It accepts only the standard form and, when a numeral is written another way (IIII, IC), suggests the standard one. A place-value breakdown shows how each answer is built, which helps students check their work. It runs in your browser.

How to Use

1

Choose a mode

Pick Number → Roman, Roman → Number or Date → Roman.

2

Type your number, numeral or date

The result appears as you type, with a breakdown such as MM = 2,000 + XX = 20 + VI = 6. For dates, use DD.MM.YYYY and choose a separator.

3

Copy or swap

Click Copy to copy the result. The arrow button converts the result back, keeping the value.

Rules & Limitations

  • Standard Roman numerals cover whole numbers from 1 to 3,999; there is no zero and no fractions.
  • Only the standard subtractive pairs are accepted: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. Forms like IIII or IC get a suggestion instead of a result.
  • Upper and lower case letters both work.
  • Date mode writes day, month and year separately, for example XV.VIII.MCMXLVII; it checks that the date exists.

Roman Numeral Converter FAQ

How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?

2026 is MMXXVI: MM for 2,000, XX for 20 and VI for 6.

Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?

Standard Roman numerals put a smaller symbol before a larger one to subtract it, and repeat a symbol at most three times. IIII appears on some clock faces, but IV is the standard form.

How do I write a date in Roman numerals?

Choose Date → Roman and type the date as DD.MM.YYYY. For example, 15.08.1947 becomes XV.VIII.MCMXLVII. You can use dots, spaces, slashes or dashes between the parts.

What is the largest Roman numeral?

In standard form, 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger numbers used special marks such as a bar over a letter, which this tool does not support.

Is anything I type sent to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
