About Word & Character Counter

Count words, characters, sentences and paragraphs as you type, along with characters without spaces, lines, unique words, and reading and speaking time. Bars show how your text fits common limits: an X post, a meta title and description, an SMS, an Instagram caption and a LinkedIn post. It handles Hindi and emoji correctly and runs in your browser.

How to Use

1

Add your text

Type or paste into the "Your text" box, or click Example to see how it works.

2

Read the counts

Words, characters, sentences and paragraphs update as you type. On a phone they stay in a strip at the top of the screen.

3

Check the limits

Under Character limits, each bar shows how much room is left, or by how much the text is over.

Privacy & Processing

  • Mode: local
  • Files Leave Browser: Local tool processing; review details below
  • Max Input Size: Device memory limits
  • Account Required: No
  • Data Stored Locally: Nothing is saved; the text is cleared when you close or reload the page.

Your text is counted in your browser and never uploaded.

Rules & Limitations

  • A word is a run of letters or numbers between spaces, so "well-known" is one word and a lone dash or emoji is not a word.
  • Characters are counted as you see them: an emoji with a skin tone or a Hindi syllable such as "स्ते" counts as one.
  • Sentences end at . ? ! or the Hindi danda (।); common abbreviations such as "Dr." and "e.g." do not end a sentence. Each line without punctuation counts as a sentence.
  • Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Reading time uses 200 words a minute and speaking time 130.
  • Very long texts (a few MB) can make the counts lag slightly behind your typing.

Word & Character Counter FAQ

How do I count words in my text?

Paste or type your text into the box. The word count appears above the box straight away and changes as you edit, along with characters, sentences and paragraphs.

Does it count Hindi words and sentences correctly?

Yes. Hindi words are counted between spaces, sentences end at the danda (।), and a syllable with vowel signs counts as one character. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which have no spaces, are split into words automatically.

Why does the SMS bar change from 160 to 70 characters?

An SMS in plain English letters holds 160 characters. Any Hindi letter, emoji or other special character switches the message to Unicode, which holds 70, so longer texts are sent as several SMS. The bar tells you how many.

Why is the X count different from the character count?

X counts links as 23 characters whatever their length, and counts emoji and Chinese or Japanese characters as 2. The X post bar uses these rules; the Characters count shows what you see.

What is the difference between characters with and without spaces?

Characters counts every letter, number, symbol, space and line break. Characters without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks, which some forms and assignments ask for.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is never sent anywhere. It is not saved either, so it is gone when you close or reload the page.
