About BMI Calculator

Work out your Body Mass Index (BMI) from your weight and height, in kg or lb and cm or feet and inches. By default it uses the Asian / Indian cut-offs, which are lower than the WHO ones because health risks start at a lower BMI, and you can switch to WHO. It also shows the healthy weight range for your height and roughly how many kg to lose or gain. It runs in your browser.

BMI Calculator FAQ

What is a healthy BMI for Indians?

For Indian and other Asian adults, a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 22.9. 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or more is obese. These cut-offs, used in India's 2009 consensus guidelines, are lower than the WHO ones because diabetes and heart risks rise at a lower BMI.

How is BMI calculated?

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. For 70 kg and 1.70 m, that is 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2.

What is the difference between the Asian and WHO BMI ranges?

WHO counts 18.5 to 24.9 as normal, 25 to 29.9 as overweight and 30 or more as obese. The Asian / Indian ranges are lower: normal up to 22.9, overweight from 23 and obese from 25.

How much weight should I lose to reach a healthy BMI?

The calculator shows the healthy weight range for your height and how many kg you are above or below it. For 170 cm on the Indian cut-offs, the range is about 53.5 to 66.2 kg.

Can I use this BMI calculator for children?

No. Children and teenagers need BMI-for-age percentile charts, because healthy BMI changes as they grow. Ask a paediatrician.

Is my weight sent anywhere?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved.
